This plate comes from the Lower Jurassic (Lias epsilon) of Holzmaden. It contains several different
bones of the crocodile Steneosaurus spec.
The bones were uncovered on both sides of the stone. The top shows some armor plates, a long bone
and rib pieces. Three vertebrae can be seen on the back.
The stone is unbroken, it measures about 16 x 14 x 2 cm.
Holzmaden is a classic location, unfortunately nowadays there are no active quarries, so no new
finds reach the market.
Crocodiles are rarely found in Holzmaden. Remains of ichthyosaurs are comparatively more frequently.
In the past, such fossils were "scraped", today the preparation using modern sandblasting
technology is much gentler, even the fine details of the fossils can be preserved.
Great piece at a reasonable price.
