This stone contains various fossils of several rodents Paleolodus haydeni. These are the extinct ancestors
of rabbits. The fossil comes from the Oligozaen (White River Badlands) of South Dakota, USA. It is about
30 million years old.
The exhibit is full of bones - some of them are still in the articulated skeletal structure. It's exciting
to look at the piece with a magnifying glass, you always find something new - we were able to identify at
least seven skulls of these interesting animals. The stone also contains various jaws with teeth, ribs,
leg bones, foot bones, shoulder parts, pelvic bones etc...
Very unusual: An entire family of rabbits must have been close together when death reached them and their
skeletons were buried nearby for millions of years.
The stone was broken and have been glued; it measures approximately 14 x 11 x 8 cm. The fossils were
uncovered from the matrix very carefully and using modern tools (sandblasting technique). A lot has
already come to light and there is certainly still a lot hidden in the stone. The piece has a natural
"base" and can be attractively presented standing displayed.
No manipulation whatsoever - everything is original in the sediment and nothing has been added from
other pieces.
Interesting and honest exhibit for the advanced collector.
