This skeleton of Apateon comes from the Permian period of Niederkirchen (Pfalz region) in Germany. The name of the layers is Schwarzpellit Bank / Rotliegendes.
The amphibian is preserved in great detail and shows an attractive contrast between the white fossil substance and the greenish-greyish sediment. Such white fossils were formed in limited areas when the fossil-bearing layers were heated by hot lava caused by vulcanic eruptions. That is why the people called such finds as "fried fossils".
The animal is attractively placed in the middle of the stone. The skeleton measures about 11 cm. Both stones are unbroekn, they measure about 26 x 18 x 1,5 cm und 17 x 14 x 1 cm.
The discovery area has been under strict protection since 1986, and no new finds from there come onto
the market. This piece comes from an old collection.
