This is the plant Pachypteris rhomboidalis. This fossil was previously called Thinnfeldia rhomboidalia. Pachypteris rhomboidalis is assigned to the Corystospermales within the seed ferns. What is interesting about these ferns is the strong variability of the foliage in terms of the shape of the feathers. The piece comes from the Lower Jurassic (Lias) sediments of Pechgraben near Bayreuth i Germany. The age is around 180 million years. The plant is complete and highly detailed and well preserved. Interesting is the natural reddish color of the fossil. It is attractively placed in the center of the matrix. The stone is unbroken and measures approximately 21 x 12 x 2 cm. High quality and rarely offered exhibit without any manipulations!
