This small perch Rhenanoperca minuta comes from the Eozaen from the Messel pit. The age of this fossil
is about 47 million years.
Rhenanoperca is an extinct genus of prehistoric bony fish that lived from the early to middle Eocene.
The animal is completely preserved and well prepared. It measures approximately 5 cm and is on unbroken
matrix (9 x 5.5 cm).
Messel fossils are highly sought-after collector's items. The site has not been accessible for many
years. This piece comes from an old collection.
As is usual with finds from the Messel mine, this exhibit was prepared using the so-called synthetic
resin transfer method. This is the only way to preserve such fossils permanently.
The Messel Pit is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and new finds have not come onto the market for decades.
The piece offered here was found in the 1970s.
Perch fishes are generally quite rare in Messel and Rhenanoperca in particular are rarely offered
for sale.
